Jim Peddle, Business Broker

How long have you been selling businesses and how did you get into M&A?

I started in the industry in 2011 after getting hired at another large franchise company located here in Chicago. My father was a business owner and I felt like my background in banking and sales was a good fit. There seemed to be a scarcity of good business brokers in Chicago.

Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?

A great question, we have closed on the sale of so many businesses and there really is no "typical" customer. We have had retiring owners, burned out owners, male, female, as well as almost every ethnic group. Living in Chicago where its so diverse you are able to work with almost everyone. That's a neat thing about being a business broker in a great metropolitan city like Chicago.

What provides you the most satisfaction?

Although it's a very demanding job, I always enjoy meeting new people and especially like hearing stories from entrepreneurs. It is very inspiring to hear the background for a business that might be 40-50 years old and 2nd or 3rd generation.  The ups and downs are so amazing. I love when the seller receives that final check for so much work for so many years of blood, sweat and tears!
